New Media Workspace

The New Media Workspace is a publicly accessible digital media lab designed to support artists working in audio, video, and lens-based practices. This space was created in response to a pressing need for accessible digital production tools in Katarokwi/Kingston. Beyond simply offering equipment, the New Media Workspace is envisioned as a hub for experimentation, collaboration, and the growth of a vibrant media arts community.

A Brief History

Established in 2002 to fill a regional gap in resources for media artists, the New Media Workspace provides access to professional equipment, workshops, and collaborative opportunities that foster innovation and community.

Initially developed with support from Cultural Spaces Canada, the Davies Charitable Foundation, and the Healthy Community Fund, the Workspace has continued to evolve as both a production and exhibition hub. In 2020, a Capital Grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation enabled major upgrades, expanding our capacity to offer industry-standard tools and technology for members and visiting artists alike.

Today, the New Media Workspace remains a vital space for experimentation, learning, and the creation of contemporary media art in Kingston and beyond.
